NOTE: For a 2013 list of school supply drives, click here.

Who can resist a new box of crayons? Especially the big one with the sharpener in the back.

No one. So feel free to buy them and donate them to any of these 2009-2010 school supply drives. Or even better, keep it for yourself! Then donate the money to the school supply drives, because they can buy a lot more school supplies with your $20 in bulk than you can at Target.

Volunteers needed, too!

(Oh, and backpacks! If your organization or business has some new, logo’d backpacks lying around, these organizations would love to hand them out to needy kids. Thanks!)

DONATE: Monetary donations also accepted. Just $20 can provide a backpack with school supplies for one child, and for $45 you can completely outfit a child with a new backpack, supplies, and two new outfits.
VOLUNTEER: Volunteers needed to prepare for event, sort items, help distribute items, take photos and video.
WHEN TO VOLUNTEER: Pre-sorting & Preparation: Monday – Friday, July 26 – 30
PICK UP SCHOOL SUPPLIES:
Monday – Friday, August 1-5 and August 8 – 12
Distribution starts at 8 am. Parents must bring identification and their children. Children pre-K – elementary school are eligible. Only 200 students will receive school supplies per day – so arrive early!

FOR ALL AGES KIDS – ONE DAY ONLY

The Back to School Parade
SUNDAY, AUG. 21
Wristband distribution 1-2:30 pm

Backpack distribution 4 pm
Parade 3-6 pm

A parade starts at the Delco Center and ends at Batholemew Park on E. 51st Street. (MAP) All school supplies will be handed out at the end of the parade on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that children who are present will get first chance to go home with school supplies; there may not be enough school supplies for others to take to children who do not attend. This year, Back to School Parade will be distributing wristbands from 1p – 2:30p at Bartholomew Park on August 21, 2011.  They will then stop the distribution of these wristbands so that you can participate in the parade and it’s festivities.  Then, they’ll actually start distributing the backpacks at 4:00p.

Doris, hello. I just got off the phone with 2-1-1. They said they could help you find free school supplies for your grandchildren.

All you have to do is pick up the phone and dial 211 – just those three numbers. They’ll ask if you want to speak to someone in English or Spanish. Tell that person you need help finding free school supplies for your grandchildren, and they’ll tell you how to get them.

In the future, if you or your family needs help with clothing, food, school supplies, or has questions about city services, just call 211. They know everything!

Thank you! Please let me know if I can help with anything else.

  7. David Guzman on July 28, 2011 at 11:08 am

    Hi @givingcityaustin ,

First off – love your website! So incredibly happy that I stumbled across it! : )

I think the link to CIS might be incorrect, as it doesn’t seem to connect to their school supply drive. I actually have a youth group that is very interested in volunteering to help sort / pack supplies on August 14. Do you know who we can get in touch with?

    Thanks so much,

    -David Guzman
