What’s his secret?

Every Monday for 25 years, Dan Henshaw has been the volunteer, all-around tool man for the massive, year-round project that is The Settlement Home Annual Charity Garage Sale.

But last Monday was special: Last Monday Henshaw celebrated his 90th birthday.

NINE-TEE. If you’re starting to think to yourself, “Man, that guy is 90? I gotta start volunteering,” then I’m going to tell you the truth that science will never prove because there’s no money in it, but here it is: Volunteering keeps you young and handsome.

Settlement Home volunteer Dan Look at Dan! What other proof do you need?!

Thanks to Andi Kelly for helping us track down more about this handsome young man and his secret to youth. He says it’s his wife, but we can’t all marry Mrs. Henshaw so let’s hope I’m right about the volunteering….

What line of work were you in before you retired?
I was in the Air Force as a pilot and then the Army as a paratrooper. We lived all over.

What is it about volunteering that keeps you coming back?
The people. I am motivated by people who are motivated to give back. Just by being around people like that, it makes me continue volunteering. In addition to The Settlement Home, I also volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and Kairos, a prison ministry group. Volunteering is what gets me out of bed in the morning and gives me purpose in my life.

What’s your special super power?
(Laughs!) Well, I know a lot about tools. I have done a lot of plumbing work for Habitat for Humanity, so I know about that too. My side kick at The Settlement Home, Bob, knows about electrical tools and I know about everything else, so we work well together.

How do you stay so young?
I owe that to my wife. She is an incredible person who just keeps me going. I’ve had a wonderful life. It might not be that exciting to anyone else, but it’s my story and it’s exciting to me. My family keeps me young.

My wife has better stories to tell than I do, but that’s another story. She followed me everywhere as a military wife and raised our kids, she is resilient and has a lot of faith.

You know no one really believes you are 90…
(Laughs…) Well, I’ve just been very blessed. It keeps me feeling young.

What do you want for your birthday?
At my age, you don’t want anything material, that doesn’t make you happy. Being around people and family, that’s all I need.

There are things going on in the world that aren’t so good, but I look at our youth, at young people, and I know there’s a lot of good out there. (Smiling) I know there are a lot of good people out there. I just want to be surrounded by that.

The Settlement Home for Children’s Annual Charity Garage Sale is November 1-4, 2012, at Palmer Events Center. I take the Friday off every year to shop. Seriously.
