If your nonprofit isn’t using social media yet… seriously, why aren’t you? It’s free, it’s easy, it’s fun — and it’s not going away.
From the “survey” I took a few weeks ago (at the One Voice Central Texas meeting, by a show of hands) most local nonprofits are using social media. Is it working for them? I got the feeling some of them were still waiting for the results. But good for them for taking that first step! Others like CASA of Travis County and Meals on Wheels and More are rocking it.
Social media can be as simple or as complicated a tool as you make it. I think it’s a bit like coming up with a mix of TV shows for an upcoming season or a playlist for a DJ…. there are some metrics that can signal possible success, but at some point you also just have to go with your gut.
More than anything else, experience counts. You can put in the hours trolling yourself or… you can learn! And guess what? On Oct. 23, there’s a great opportunity to do just that.
The Social Media for Nonprofits Conference has been produced in other cities for a few years, but this is the first time it will be in Austin. Yes, it costs money, but lots of us are offering discounts. And… well, if $100 is all you spend on social media this year, isn’t that worth it?
The Social Media for Nonprofits Conference is a full day of social media superstars: bigtimers from Facebook, DonorDrive, Constant Contact (our friend Julie Niehoff), VolunteerMatch, Livestrong (Austin’s Brooke McMillan) and more will give presentations full of practical tips and tools for leveraging social media for fundraising, marketing and advocacy.
Small nonprofits pay just $95. For-profits and larger nonprofits can use the “Give” discount code to save $20 off $125 and $175 tickets. Conference registration includes access to the full-day conference, breakfast, and lunch. PLUS you’ll get to check out this new-ish nonprofit event space, Shoal Crossing. Did I mention the awesomeness that is Microsoft is the sponsor? And don’t forget the networking….
