Austin YES made a special visit to each Del Valle Independent School District elementary school on Thursday, August 29 to distribute free school supply kits to students. Austin YES is a nonprofit organization that provides Title 1 elementary school students, kindergarten through fifth grade, with the school supplies they need to start the school year off right as part of the Back to Basics Project.
Austin YES is a subsidiary of SA YES which is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1998 with a simple purpose: provide school supplies to area Title 1 elementary students that need assistance. Over the years, more than $3 million dollars has been put back into our communities through school supply distribution, scholarships for high school students and grants for schools and educational nonprofits. Austin YES is fully funded through corporate and private donors.
“We were thrilled to come back to Del Valle ISD this year and received a warm welcome from students, faculty and staff,” said Austin YES Executive Director, Danielle Gunter. “This is our favorite time of the year as we get to personally meet the students and help them start the year off confident and prepared.”
Last year, Austin YES staff members and dedicated volunteers personally distributed over 7,500 school supply kits to local Title 1 elementary students.
“We are grateful to work with an organization that values education and gives back to the community,” said Del Valle Director of Community Relations and Education Partners, Christopher Weddle. “The students have been looking forward to this day and are eager to start using their new supplies.”
In total, Austin YES donated 5,000 school supply kits to Del Valle ISD this year. Each student received a kit that included colored pencils, crayons, notebook paper, erasers, glue, folders, pencils, a ruler, ballpoint pens and a box of tissues.
