The City has reportedly been asked to shelter up to 7,000 Harvey evacuees, and there are a number of ways you can help.
Right now, the Red Cross is operating the two main shelters in Austin, at the Delco Center and at Lanier High School. But with more evacuees coming, Travis County is considering opening the Travis County Expo Center and the City of Austin will open the Palmer Events Center to evacuees later this week.
The Red Cross processed and trained more than 2,000 volunteers this past weekend and is currently waiting to deploy those in the shelters. They are not currently in need of more volunteers or donations of household items or clothes. They are accepting monetary donations now: Visit , call 1- 800-RED CROSS or text the word HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
You might also considering housing a family that has evacuated. Airbnb has created a portal just for Hurricane Harvey survivors and is waiving all fees for those offering up their homes. Call 1-415-800-5959 or 1-855424-7562 or go here. The Jewish Federation of San Antonio has created this survey for those interested in offering housing to people in need. And the Austin Disaster Relief Network is accepting applications for volunteers to help sponsor evacuees.
