Texans Can Academy – Austin Can students and teachers are excited for a new opportunity to prepare students for college through the College Forward program. A limited number of students were selected for the program and all 21 students were in attendance for the orientation and coaching with an experiential learning expert earlier this month. Many of the school’s students face obstacles such as limited transportation and most are the first in their families attempting to go to college.
“The students in this program are extremely committed and determined to succeed,” said Texans Can Academy – Austin Can Principal William Arevalo. “We can’t wait to see the development of our students and all of the valuable resources College Forward can offer them in the program.”
College Forward’s mission is to coach students similar to those at Texans Can Academies who are underserved but motivated to achieve the benefits of higher education and reap the rewards a college degree can bring. During the two-year program, teachers and advisors develop a rubric for selected students in their senior year of high school. The program includes coaches that know the ins and outs of getting into college and teaches the students how to succeed while trying to achieve their degree. They work with students their last year of high school and their first year of college.
The Austin-based nonprofit will be partnering with all 14 Texans Can Academy campuses to set up students for success in graduating high school and making it to college. Approximately 20 students from each campus – over 200 students total – will be selected for the program. Each student is chosen for the program based on different criteria including the student’s desire to attend college and academic scores prior to entering the program.
Students accepted into the program receive valuable experience through guidance on many different college processes, including selection, application, admission, financial assistance and enrollment, as well as essay workshops and practice college entrance exams. College Forward also gives students the opportunity to visit colleges and interact with college students and professors.
