2013 List of School Supply Drives Around Austin

School Supplies AustinBack-to-School season has become one of the biggest shopping seasons, second only to the winter holidays. Sixty-seven percent of U.S. parents plan to spend more than $100 per child on back-to-school shopping this year, according to a recent study conducted by Harris Interactive for Austin-based company Offers.com.

$100 to start school. Sadly, many families in Austin cannot afford to spend that much money on school supplies.

It’s up to us to assist with efforts to make sure that every Central Texas student is prepared for academic success, below is our annual list of school supply drives.

Please make sure to double-check with each of these organizations before you commit to donate or volunteer. While we do our best to include the best available information, each of these projects are subject to change.

Accepting donations until July 30, 2013

DONATE: 1,000 CIS students need backpacks and school supplies. YOU can help! A $20.25/$22.25 donation provides a CIS student with a backpack and a full set of school supplies. Click here to donate by 7/30/13.

PICK UP SCHOOL SUPPLIES: Distributed to campuses that CIS has programming on (about 56 schools); for students enrolled in the program on that campus. To find out if your child is enrolled in the CIS program at his or her school, contact your school’s office.

The First Tee partner with Walmart to host this community back-to-school event. Families who register for the event will receive free school supplies and educational information regarding healthy eating and lifestyle choices. The event will also offer fun and games for the kids, music, snacks, Walmart gift cards and other raffle prizes.

PICK UP SCHOOL SUPPLIES: To attend this free event, families must register online at http://www.thefirstteeaustin.org/backtoschool. The first 300 school kids at the event get a special prize bag.

Volunteer opportunity August 18, distribution August 23. The organization raised school supplies for over 700 homeless kids in Manor and Austin ISDs through its Bollywood Meets Borscht Belt event held May 19.

VOLUNTEER: The school supplies have been ordered and will be packed (click on link for details) on Sunday, August 18 starting at 1pm at Dell Jewish Community Campus on 7300 Hart Lane, 78731.

PICK UP SCHOOL SUPPLIES: Supplies will be distributed to the kids at Manor ISD starting at 9am on Friday, August 23 at 10335 US Hwy 290E Manor, TX 78653.




Donations accepted until August 16. Headspring aims to garner 1,000 backpack donations to benefit five of the most economically challenged schools in the Austin area for the 2013-2014 school year.

DONATE: Using the supply list on the website created for the Backpack Drive, you can pack a backpack and drop it off at one of the designated bins at Headspring Headquarters, 10415 Morado Circle, Austin, TX 78759, Building III.

If you would rather the Headspring team pack and put together the backpack (valued at $40 each), financial donations are accepted on the Backpack Drive website. Headspring will match every donation made!

PICK UP SCHOOL SUPPLIES: Headspring volunteers will purchase, pack, and drop off the back packs with school supplies to the administration department of each school for the teachers to distribute to their classrooms as needed.

Campaign runs July 10 – August 28. For the Children’s school supply fundraising drive is now in its 24th year. FTC currently serves children in Pre-K to 4th Grade in 10 school districts: Austin, Del Valle, Manor, Pflugerville, Leander, Round Rock, Dripping Springs, Lake Travis, Lago Vista and Hays Consolidated.  100 percent of your donation goes toward buying new school supplies.

DONATE: Since FTC purchases supplies in bulk, as little as $40 can provide basic school supplies for 10 students. Contributions can be made securely online at www.schoolsuppliesforthechildren.org or mailed to For The Children Inc. at P.O. Box 29346, Austin, TX 78755.

PICK UP SCHOOL SUPPLIES: Supplies are distributed to the schools prior to the start of the school year so that children can start the school year on a happy note.

  • Businesses, organizations, groups and individuals can join the Crayon Club to sponsor the low income students of an entire school.
  • H-E-B stores are providing an easy way to give by having scan coupons available at the cash registers July 10-August 28.



Volunteer opportunities starting July 22 and ending August 9. Manos de Cristo will help over 2,000 children prepare for a successful school year.


Preparation Week

Monday through Thursday shifts are 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. and Friday shifts are from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Program & Distribution

July 29 – August 2 and August 5 – 9

Shifts for the distribution weeks are 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Please note if any volunteers are 13 or under. Children under 13 must volunteer with a parent or adult responsible for them.

PICK UP SCHOOL SUPPLIES: North Austin Events Center has generously offered to let us hold our event in their building once again. It is located at 10601 North Lamar Blvd. Each day the first 200 children will be served.

6th annual parade takes place August 18. The Back to School Parade celebrates education and the return to school in the form of a parade and uses the proceeds to purchase school supplies for those who need them.

  • You can also make a direct deposit into the Back To School Parade account to Sponsor A Child for $15 per backpack (1 for $15, 2 for $30, 5 for $75, 10 for $150, 100 for $1500, etc.) at one of the Austin-area Capital One Banks, or on the Back to School Parade website.

VOLUNTEER: The parade takes place Aug. 18 from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. at Bartholomew Park, 5201 Berkman Drive, 78723. The event could use parade organizers, beginning and ending cleanup and setup crew, school supply packagers, school supply distributors, public relations, etc. To volunteer, please e-mail your name, phone number, your hours of availability, and number of volunteers in your party to info@backtoschoolparade.org.

PICK UP SCHOOL SUPPLIES: To make it possible to celebrate and still get a backpack, we’re distributing wristbands from 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. at Bartholomew Park on August 18. We will then stop the distribution of these wristbands so that you can participate in the parade and its festivities.  Backpack distribution will start at 4:00 p.m. The hope is that you won’t need to stand in line for so long.

Donations accepted until August 9. The annual School Supplies Drive provides basic supplies to Round Rock ISD students in need.

DONATE: Monetary donations are now being accepted for Round Rock Partners in Education.

Donation levels are designed to meet both corporate and individuals’ giving budgets. Individuals might want to  “adopt” a student ($10 per child) so they may receive a bag of new school supplies.

  • Other levels: $750 to benefit 75 students; $500 to benefit 50 students, $250 to benefit 25 students; $100 to benefit 10 students; $50 to benefit 5 students
  • Teacher’s Pet Level: $5,000 to benefit 500 students
  • Golden Rule Level: $10,000 to benefit 1,000 students
  • Shining Apple Level: $20,000 to benefit 2,000 students

PICK UP SUPPLIES: School supplies are provided to Round Rock ISD students who participate in the free and reduced lunch program. This year’s school supplies’ distribution day will be held at Cedar Ridge High School in August. Children will receive a bag with grade-appropriate supplies including notebooks, paper, rulers, and writing utensils.

Donations accepted until August 9. Families struggling to lead violence-free lives can feel extra strain when kids go back to school. Compounded by the violence they have suffered, issues of homelessness and lack of resources, it can be exceedingly difficult for a parent to provide all the necessary school supplies for his or her children. The supplies will go to children in the SafePlace shelter or supportive housing program, and are also available to the children who participate in SafePlace counseling programs, or whose parents are part of counseling and prevention programs.


In person – by collecting school supplies (a general list can be found at http://www.safeplace.org/backtoschool) and dropping them off at SafePlace’s Donations Warehouse at 1515 Grove Blvd, Austin, TX 78741 during donation hours (Tuesday-Friday 10am-3pm; Wednesday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.).

Online – by visiting SafePlace’s Walmart wishlist to select the items you’d like to donate. At checkout, have the items shipped to ATTN: Steven Olender, SafePlace, 1515 Grove Blvd, Austin, TX 78741.
